The trouble is that the affected white cells cannot be cultured in the laboratory. The only laboratory test which suggests the presence of the white cells is the splenic scan. My illness is similar to that of a man named Kieper who also was treated at Albert Einstein hospital at the time I was treated. About six months after his treatment he developed blood-borne HIV infection. I had been worried that I might have been infected with HIV when I had the white blood cell transfusions. You have to understand that until the AIDS epidemic AIDS was virtually unknown. A simple blood test could not have diagnosed me with AIDS. My doctor did not believe that I had AIDS but to his credit he ordered a lab test and my white blood cells were abnormal. I'm sorry to say that I became very depressed and disturbed during the period of my illness. My condition eventually became a matter of public knowledge and a number of people began to request that I accept the treatment with AZT. I refused at first but later decided to take it. The treatment was helpful. However, I decided to leave AZT when I developed side effects such as diarrhea, dizziness and anemia. In January 1986 I returned to Baltimore where I was treated again with chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and bone marrow transplantation. These treatments again eliminated the abnormal white blood cells and my condition improved. In 1987 I returned to London, England. I was again treated with blood transfusions, intravenous immunoglobulins, and bone marrow transplantation. Despite these measures, the white blood cells were found to be abnormal again. It was then that I was diagnosed with aplastic anemia. Aplastic anemia is a rare disorder of the bone marrow. It is characterized by a decrease in blood cells. The disorder is most likely to occur in the first two years of life and is a life-long condition. It is a serious condition and can lead to the death of an affected person. This is the first time that I have published information about my illness but I feel that it is important to do so in order to give the correct information to people who are suffering from aplastic anemia
